L'mwbgAstrohippus (mwbwStirton, 1940)cite-ref-1[1] è un membro estinto della tribù degli mwdaEquini, a cui appartiene anche l'unico genere vivente degli mwdqequidi, l'mwdgEquus. Resti fossili sono stati trovati nella zona centrale degli mwdwStati Uniti, in mweaFlorida ed in alcuni stati mweqmessicani: mwegChihuahua, mwewJalisco e mwfaGuanajuato. I fossili di mwfqAstrohippus sono stati datati dal periodo mwfgMiocene al periodo mwfwPliocene.

Sulla base dello studio della morfologia del dente si ritiene improbabile che l'mwgqAstrohippus possa essere un antenato del mwggcavallo moderno; è molto più probabile che possa essere discendente del mwgwPliohippus.

I primi resti fossili di questa specie, descritti da WD Matthew ed RA Stirton, si basano su diversi molari trovati nella cava di Coffee Ranch, mwiaContea di Hemphill, mwiqTexas. Questa cava ha conservato i resti di sei altri generi di equidi, compresi il mwigDinohippus e mwiwNannippus.
